Vern Putney

A golfer AND CADDIE who loved the game and all it stood for...

The Maine Golf Hall of Fame was founded in 1993 by Vern Putney, Carmen Pettapiece, Dick Doyle and Joseph Stillman, to recognize and honor Maine's outstanding individuals who excelled in the great game of golf, whether as a player, coach, benefactor, executive or a person who has made a major impact on the game.

Poland Spring Resort

Poland Spring Resort, Circa 1794

Since 1794, guests have enjoyed our clean air, water, and beautiful scenery… It’s like a bit of heaven on earth and we would like to share it with you. We are proud of our home-like atmosphere and our super friendly staff. Poland Spring is on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Enjoy a round of golf on our 18-hole golf course, play tennis one of our three grass courts, explore our rich history at the Poland Spring museums, and participate in many indoor and outdoor activities. Enjoy some family activities together; like swimming in our huge pool, playing on the swings hike, play mini golf and disc golf.

MAINE STATE BUILDING, CIRCA 1893

The Maine State Building was originally built in 1893 for the Chicago Worlds Fair also known as the Columbian Exposition. The Fair was to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus. All 44 states, dozens of countries and even companies sent buildings to the grounds to participate in the grand event. In total, there were almost 200 buildings on the grounds.

“It was considered best to construct, if possible, a building of Maine granite, slate and other materials that would typify and exhibit these industrial products so abundant in our State…The State building occupied a commanding and desirable location at Jackson Park, on the shore of that vast inland sea, Lake Michigan.” 1895 Report of Board of World’s Fair Managers."
